IRS Filing Season Start
The IRS will begin accepting 2025 individual income tax returns on January 26, 2026. This start date is consistent with last year, even though IRS staffing has been reduced.
Filing Deadlines
- Standard Deadline
For most taxpayers, the deadline to file or request an extension is April 15, 2026. - Overseas and Military
Individuals living abroad or serving in the military outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico have until June 15, 2026.
W-2s and 1099s Delivery
Employers must issue W-2s and businesses must issue 1099s by February 2, 2026. Normally, the deadline is January 31, but since it falls on a Saturday this year, the next business day applies.
- If mailed, February 2 is the postmark deadline, so expect possible delays in receiving paper forms.
Benefits of Filing Early
Filing early can speed up refunds, which the IRS typically issues within 21 days. However, reduced staffing and other factors may cause delays. The IRS advises not to rely on refunds for time-sensitive expenses.
Filing Early and Identity Theft Protection
Submitting your return early helps protect against tax identity theft. Once your legitimate return is filed, it becomes harder for fraudsters to submit a false one using your information.
Paper Check Refund Phaseout
Under Executive Order 14247, the IRS is phasing out paper refund checks.
- Refunds will be issued via direct deposit or electronic funds transfer (EFT).
- Alternatives such as prepaid debit cards or digital wallets will be available for those without bank accounts.
- Electronic refunds are faster and reduce risks of lost or stolen checks.
Paying Taxes When Filing Early
Even if you file early, payment is still due by April 15, 2026. Paying sooner may reduce penalties and interest if you underpaid during the year.
If You Can’t Pay in Full
- File your return or extension on time to avoid failure-to-file penalties.
- Pay as much as possible by April 15 to minimize interest and penalties.
- Request an installment plan for the remaining balance.
Filing for Extension
Anyone can request an automatic extension until October 15, 2026 by filing Form 4868 by April 15.
- Note: An extension to file does not extend the deadline to pay taxes owed.
